About Dani
A CPA-turned-screenwriter, Dani Milton always had a passion for writing. Growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, her first story in elementary school was about magic books that whisked a young girl wherever her imagination desired. But she studied accounting in college and became a corporate CPA, having had little exposure to the arts while growing up. For religious reasons, Dani’s family didn’t even go to movie theaters. It was only as an adult that she learned how movies are made: they start with writers! This discovery of screenwriting was a perfect pairing of her love of film and writing.
Dani went on to complete the screenwriting certificate program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. During this time, she worked as a production accountant at a Brooklyn production company to understand film finance. Dani has also served on the board of the Kansas City Film Festival since 2015 which keeps her close to indie films and emerging filmmakers.
Often joking about a left-brain, right-brain conflict, Dani has written several feature length screenplays, television pilots and short scripts while continuing to work in corporate accounting. Her scripts have placed in numerous competitions, including her historical drama-romance, DEVIL’S MOUTH, which was a 2022 Academy Nicholl Fellowship Semifinalist. Dani was a 2022 Hedgebrook Writer in Residence, and her recent accolades include being a 2024 Fellow in the Moonshot Pilot Accelerator with her survival thriller/mystery pilot, SOLUS, as well as a 2024 Fellow in the Plenty of Pie Talent Incubator with DEVIL’S MOUTH. Dani is currently in post-production on her reproductive rights sci-fi short film, The First Martian, which she wrote, directed and produced.
Dani centers Black women in stories across space and time because, growing up, she never saw herself represented in the genres she loves.
